About Sock Yarn
Sock yarn is any yarn you use to knit socks...

It can also be called fingering weight or 4 ply. A ply is one of the twisted strands that make a yarn; the more plies there are the thicker the yarn. 4 ply is the thinnest of the readily available yarns.

Natural or man-made?

Yarn can be made up of natural or man-made fibres. Natural fibres include wool, mohair, angora, cashmere, alpaca, llama, silk, bamboo, cotton and linen. Man-made fibres include regenerated natural fibres (viscose rayon, acetates) or synthetic (polyamides, polyesters, acrylics).

Man-made fibres are easier and cheaper to produce. However natural fibres generally breathe and are absorbent. They pill less, if at all, take dyes better and don’t attract dirt as readily.

Fibres have different qualities in relation to handle (how it feels to touch), resilience (the elasticity or ‘give’ a yarn has), twist and texture. Some wonderful yarns are a blend of natural and man-made fibres. However, a cheap blend may not have a lot of the quality natural fibre so it’s important to check the proportions. These should be on the label.

Non-sock projects for sock yarn.

If you’re looking for ideas check out the fingering weight category in ravelry patterns. Some of my favourites are hats and bags, fingerless mittens, shawls, dolls clothes and teddy bears.

Double pointed needles

You need 5 small double pointed needles to knit socks (to avoid having seams) or you can use round needles.
Personally I enjoy the involvement of double pointed needles.
Bamboo seem to be a favourite.
